Manufacturer BlackBerry, Research in Motion managed to make record sales of smartphones in the first quarter of this fiscal year. Waterloo, Ontario-based company had shipped 11.2 million devices during the quarter ended May 29 compared with 10.5 million units in the previous quarter.

RIM said quarterly net profit of U.S. $ 769 million (USD 6.9 trillion), up 19.5% compared with the same quarter last year. Revenues have grown as many as 24% to U.S. $ 4.24 billion (USD 38.5 trillion).

"We continue to focus on developing our business globally," said one of the chief executive of RIM, Jim Balsillie, as quoted from Yahoo News. "We are confident that many exciting products to be released Blackberry in the next few months will be significant in creating opportunities to accelerate the growth of RIM," she said.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month RIM is developing a touch screen smartphone with slide-out keyboard and tablet devices. The newspaper said the move was designed to prevent the BlackBerry lost share due to competition with Apple's iPhone and iPad, as well as mobile devices running Google's Android operating system.

RIM touchscreen smartphone, the Blackberry Storm has failed to match the popularity of the iPhone, the latest version, the iPhone 4 which exploded across the world. On the other hand, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said last Wednesday that more than 160 thousand devices with the Android operating system sold worldwide every day.
